CASE STUDY
Insight
Overview
The executive team at FOX gathers once a month to discuss film scheduling, plans, box office information and review any artwork available. They hold this meeting in a closed-circuit private board room with multiple monitors to see the landscape as far as 18-24 months out. They also need the ability to see the 10,000ft. view and dive deep down into the details of any given release. Given their full schedules, FOX IT was looking for a solution that would allow them to plan in advance or refer to personal devices while they discussed as a group. Insight was the iPad app intended to resolve some of their business planning pain points.
Challenge
There was an aggressive timeline outlined that would need to be met. If all reviews went smoothly and dev was on board, the date could be met. From a user perspective, this application was designed with 4 executives in mind, all of whom were extremely busy but also had extremely high expectations for anything they might adopt. The executives had varying degrees of comfort with an iPad, it would need to be simple enough to use without their assistants being present.
Solution
My role was UX and Design oversight; working with a UX designer and two visual designers we created an experience that both mirrored what they had to date and extended it by incorporating more information than they might be able to access in a board room. We also looked for simple interaction models, so they could use the application in familiar ways. We also incorporated their genre colors and designations to reduce the cognitive load.
Outcome
It was en extremely quick process, we did an initial pitch, 2 rounds of UX, each round focusing on different features, made small updates and then moved on to design. Design was completed in 2 rounds. While UX and Design were working through the details, Development was already working to ensure services were performing as expected and working out the underlying architecture. Within approximately 3 weeks UX and Design was complete and Dev was able to deliver in 6 weeks with a final build at 8 weeks and rolled out.
The application continues to live on at FOX, the executives have all left since 2012, but the application is still functional and in use by some internal teams.
